CM42 trail run is the qualifying race for the CM50 which will be held on November 24, 2013. The race course covers the trail that lead to Miyamit Falls and close to the peak of Mt. Pinatubo. The route is very difficult and very hilly with the elevation gain/loss of 2,500 meters. It’s rugged and remote but scenic especially when you reach the peak (I experienced it in 1st CM50).

The heavy downpour reduced the visibility that even with a headlamp, it would be difficult to see and it would be dangerous for the participants to start the race at dawn. With safety of the participants in mind, the organizer, Atty. Jonnifer M. Lacanlale, moved the gunstart to 0530H. He also made sure that the runners were safe in the trail by securing trail signs and posting marshalls and aide stations in designated areas. The marshalls were equipped with tents, coat and first aid kit and there were food and drinks at the aide stations for the runners.
The happy volunteer marshalls (Thanks for the chicken adobo!)
For this race, I wore the new Berghaus Vapour Claw GORE-TEX® Trail Running Shoes. It has a good snug fit, cradles and secures my feet in place and yet allows the right amount of flexibility, making every step and stride comfy even with the sticky mud and slippery uphills and downhills. This is made possible by the technology called the Limpet fit. The high-profile 5mm lugs of the Vapour Claw and its new high-intensity opti-stud sole provided excellent traction on the muddy and slippery surfaces. This allowed me to move efficiently and accurately through the trail. The upper is made with the GORE-TEX® breathable membrane. Its main function is to provide water proofing, but it also functioned as an effective shield against mud and sand which is a problem for other trail shoes with mesh upper.

What can be improved though are the laces. Because of the weather conditions, I had to keep the snug fit of the shoes, and the only adjustment is through the laces. The shoes still had the conventional shoe laces, adjusting them took some time. An easy –adjusting shoe laces like the boa lace or quick lace type would be more appropriate especially during races where every second counts.
I don’t usually use a new pair of trail shoes in a race for certain reasons, but I must admit I am happy with the shoes.
To carry my supplies, I used the Berghaus Vapour 15L rucksack. It’s very lightweight and it features a separate compartment for the hydration pack. This practical feature ensures that other supplies inside the bag will stay dry in case the hydration pack has a leak or is punctured. It also has a very accessible hip pocket for my nutrition gel, chocolate and mobile phone and has an easily accessible side pocket that can hold an extra water bottle. The Vapour 15L rucksack also has comfortable adjustable straps and a whistle for use in case of emergency.

I am not unfamiliar to the CM42 race. But this time, CM42 proved to be more challenging. From the all-star line-up of runners, to heavy rains, to the race course - this event truly brought out the athlete in the participants!
Many thanks to the race director Atty. Jonnifer M. Lacanlale and volunteer marshalls for the tough yet safe race.
Congratulations to all!
